High power transistors
High power transistors are designed for applications where high performance and reliability are require, such as switching of low voltage high current DC/AC loads and for audio amplifiers. These power transistors feature a rugged design for durability, high efficiency and low total harmonic distortion, and they provide a means to switch high currents and voltages with minimal loss.
They are similar to their low or medium power counterparts, but they are designed to handle more power without being damaged by it. In addition to amplifying and switching signals, high power transistors can also be used as field effect transistors (FETs) where the voltage applied between the drain and source terminals is controlled by a current flowing through an external resistance connected between the gate terminal and source terminal. The FETs use a metal-insulator-metal (MIM) process, which results in low on-resistance devices with excellent channel conduction.
